Demands on Wal-Mart 'tightened'
Tega Cay drafts terms of deal
TEGA CAY -- The ball is back in Wal-Mart's court. Or at least it will be before long.
Tuesday night the Tega Cay City Council met behind closed doors with representatives and lawyers for Wal-Mart and The Tuttle Co. to work out the final wording of a draft amendment for the Stonecrest development agreement. The idea is to anchor Stonecrest with a Wal-Mart supercenter. "We're tightening up the language," Mayor Bob Runde said. The draft amendment was expected to include the 14 demands the city council has already said it wants Wal-Mart to comply with. Runde said the meeting was set to make sure there was wording in the amendment that allows the city to enforce penalties for noncompliance with those issues. "There's no use agreeing to something if you can't enforce it," Runde said. Earlier on Tuesday, prior to the meeting, City Manager Grant Duffield said he expected the council to task City Attorney Bob McCleave with writing the final version of the draft amendment. Meanwhile, developer Bryan Tuttle of The Tuttle Co. was looking forward to the meeting. He said the language for the draft agreement had been circulating for a while and he hoped to hear back on it this week. Should Wal-Mart get the go ahead to build in Stonecrest, Tuttle said, construction of the store could take 10 months. However, before construction could begin, the project would have to go through a lengthy development approval process. Us Against the WAL, which opposes bringing Wal-Mart to Tega Cay, is also waiting. Spokeswoman Hope MacBride said things are quiet now for the group since it handed the council a petition signed by people who oppose the deal. Pending the outcome of the draft amendment, The Tuttle Co. is expected to make an annexation request. To build the Wal-Mart in Stonecrest, Tuttle needs Tega Cay to annex 17 acres along the corner of Hwy. 160 West and Dam Road. Wal-Mart spokesman Glen Wilkins said his company would have to look over any draft the city produces very carefully before agreeing to it. He said he could not estimate how long that might take. |
