What You Think: A Sampling of Letters to the Editor Supporting Wal-Mart
We need civilization
Dear Editor, It's about time that we start developing and growing this area, for I am tired of having to drive out to Rock Hill or Hwy. 49 just to get to civilization. Amanda Champi Fort Mill Let's compromise Dear Editor, Regardless of what is built there, the traffic is bound to get worse. When the county widened Hwy. 160 West, don't you think they already knew how many cars were going to be traveling this way? You have to give them credit for planning ahead. If it were still a two-lane road, we would all be in trouble. Lot of comments have criticized the wages paid by Wal-Mart. A lot of companies start their employees at the minimum wage, and though it's not a true living wage, most of these employees have another income in the home. If it were as bad as everyone says, no one would work for Wal-Mart, yet the company seems to have steady employees who seem happy. The ideal situation would be to have no more building and keep all the trees and everything as it is, but we all know that is impossible. Tega Cay needs the business for its tax base. Like it or not, we are going to see more houses and businesses, and we need to listen with an open mind and be open to new ideas. Everybody feels like "not in my backyard," but there comes a time when we have to compromise. Lucille M. Carbone Tega Cay We want it Dear Editor, The thought of us having that convenience just around the corner is fantastic. Not to mention the boost to the tax base. John Proctor Tega Cay Wal-Mart taxes would be a relief Dear Editor, Allowing a center with Wal-Mart as its anchor could substantially reduce the tax burden on the residents of Tega Cay. Stuart Moskovitz Fort Mill We welcome it Dear Editor, The retail formula that these large stores represent provides for single-stop shopping and lower prices. Most new shopping plazas with a Wal-Mart or K-Mart contain many smaller stores that "feed" off the people that are drawn to the superstore format. The newly upgraded Hwy. 160 and Gold Hill Road connector, planned in conjunction with the Stonecrest development, will adequately respond to the traffic. Paul Arbuckle Tega Cay It would be a boon Dear Editor, I bet the nay sayers won't stay away once they see the freedom the new store will bring. By the way, the beginning of a commercial tax base for Tega Cay will finally complete the revival of a town that is thriving after almost dying. Jerry Ballard Tega Cay |
