What's happened so far? What happens next?
May 25, 2004 Tega Cay Mayor Bob Runde announces Wal-Mart is interested in building a supercenter on the Stonecrest property at the York County Regional Chamber of Commerce State of the Community Breakfast.

May 26, 2004 Tega Cay resident Roberta Whitaker begins organizing residents into a group to oppose a Wal-Mart supercenter in Stonecrest.

July 2, 2004 Stonecrest landowner Herman Stone sends a letter to the City of Tega Cay offering to renegotiate the Stonecrest development agreement to make room for a 203,000-square-foot Wal-Mart supercenter. Stone offers to eliminate 14 acres of apartments and turn the land into commercial space if the city will annex 15 acres into Stonecrest and zone it to allow the Wal-Mart to be built.

July 10, 2004 Tega Cay City Manager Grant Duffield presents numbers to City Council and residents at a specially scheduled council meeting on Stonecrest's impact on city expenses based on the offer included in Stone's letter.

July 22, 2004 Tega Cay City Council holds a meeting/public hearing at Fort Mill High School Auditorium that allows opposition group Us Against the WAL, the city and Wal-Mart all to make presentations. Forty-three of the more than 800 people attending the meeting voice their opinions to the council.

Teri Ackerman is escorted out of the meeting by police after refusing to step away from the podium. City leaders told her she could not speak because she had not signed up to speak.

July 28, 2004 Teri Ackerman steps down as spokeswoman for Us Against the WAL.

Aug. 14, 2004 Us Against the WAL begins a petition drive within the city limits of Tega Cay, and chooses Tega Cay resident Hope MacBride as its new spokeswoman.

Aug. 26, 2004 Tega Cay Citizens for Wal-Mart begin distributing a flyer asking residents to voice support for Wal-Mart to City Hall.

Landowner Herman Stone and developer the Tuttle Co. have to buy 15 acres adjacent to Stonecrest from Dean Crisp, the landowner. Then they need to ask the Tega Cay City Council to annex the property and rezone it for commercial use. The City Council must approve the annexation and rezoning requests before the Wal-Mart deal can proceed. Stonecrest Boulevard and the other infrastructure of Stonecrest then have to be put in, and a supercenter typically takes 10 months to build.
