Wal-Mart foes make changes
Group picks new name, new leader
TEGA CAY--Us Against the WAL has a new spokeswoman, and the group opposed to Wal-Mart in Tega Cay also has taken on a new name.
Tega Cay resident Hope MacBride stepped up this week to take over as the public face of the group after Teri Ackerman bowed out last month. "Somebody has to do it," MacBride said. "We need someone in Tega Cay willing to take responsibility." She and her fellow Tega Cay residents are also taking on the name "Tega Cay Citizens for Responsible Growth." Though the name has changed, the goals have not, MacBride said. The group still opposes a big box retailer in Stonecrest. For the next three weeks, Tega Cay Citizens for Responsible Growth will go door-to-door in Tega Cay with three petitions. One will let residents sign their names in support of a Wal-Mart supercenter in Stonecrest, one will allow residents to sign in opposition of the Wal-Mart, and the third will be for residents who haven't made up their minds yet, MacBride said. She said members of her group will be happy to answer questions but will not force their views on anyone. "We're just trying to get out there to every door so that we can all see exactly where the community stands," MacBride said. As a more visible sign of opposition, the group is also asking residents who oppose the 203,000-square-foot supercenter to tie a green ribbon on their car's antenna.
