Wal-Mart opinions abound
Guidelines set for Tega Cay meeting July 22
TEGA CAY--People with questions or comments about the proposed Wal-Mart in Stonecrest should show up early to Fort Mill High School next week.
Those who want to speak during the forum July 22 must sign up starting at 6 p.m. Sign-up sheets will be grouped in four categories: Tega Cay residents for Wal-Mart, Tega Cay residents against Wal-Mart, non-residents for Wal-Mart and non-residents against Wal-Mart. From 6 to 7 p.m., Wal-Mart representatives and the opponents' group "Us Against the WAL" will answer questions about the proposed 203,000-square-foot supercenter. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. and end promptly at 10 p.m. Mayor Bob Runde and Tega Cay City Council members Judi Tesla and Stephen Perkins will be at the meeting, but Larry Harper said he will not be able to attend, and Ron Kirby could not be reached to confirm whether he will attend or not. Runde will call the meeting to order at 7 p.m., then "Us Against the WAL" will have 15 minutes for its presentation. Wal-Mart officials will then have 45 minutes to make their presentation. After Wal-Mart is through, Tega Cay city leaders will make a 15-minute presentation, followed by a short break. When the meeting restarts around 8:30 p.m., people who signed up on one of the four sheets before the meeting will get a chance to speak. Speakers will be limited to two minutes each, and no questions will be allowed, Runde said. Runde will call names from the two lists of Tega Cay residents first, alternating between those for and those against Wal-Mart. He will call people in the order they signed up. Only if all the Tega Cay residents who signed up have spoken will the comments time be opened up to non-residents who oppose or support Wal-Mart. With the comments lasting about 90 minutes, about 45 people are expected to have time to speak. "If we run out of time, that's it," Runde said.
